The Iron Region is a term historically used to describe a stretch of northern England and Scotland whose economy was dominated by the production of iron and iron‑based products. The area traditionally includes the counties of Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, and parts of the Scottish Borders, centred around major industrial towns such as Sheffield, Birmingham, and Newcastle upon Tyne. The region is bounded by the Pennine Hills to the west and the Humber estuary to the east, and it contains abundant iron ore seams and high‑quality coal deposits which enabled extensive smelting and forging operations.
