By emitting ions, these emitters create a conductive path, allowing static charges to dissipate harmlessly. This is particularly important in manufacturing environments where sensitive electronics are handled.

In mass spectrometry, ion emitters are used to ionize molecules. Mass spectrometry is an analytical technique used to determine the mass-to-charge ratio of ions. Before this can be done, the sample molecules must be converted into ions. Various ionization methods exist, and some involve the use of ion emitters to achieve this ionization.

The design and operation of ion emitters vary depending on their intended use. Some common types include corona discharge ionizers, electron gun ionizers, and radiofrequency ionizers. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of efficiency, power consumption, and potential byproducts.
