It relies on the principle of ion exchange, where ions in a solution are exchanged with ions on a solid ion-exchange material. This material is typically a resin, a porous polymer containing charged functional groups.

In a typical ion-exchange process, the solution containing the ions to be separated is passed through a column packed with the ion-exchange resin. If the resin is negatively charged (anion exchanger), it will attract and bind positively charged ions (cations) from the solution, releasing its own cations in exchange. Conversely, a positively charged resin (cation exchanger) will bind anions and release its own anions.
