Ionikäsittelyt refers to a group of chemical processes that involve the exchange of ions between a solid material and a solution. This technique is widely used in various applications, including water purification, chemical separation, and industrial processes. The core principle behind ion exchange is the reversible binding of ions to a solid resin.

In ion exchange, a solid material, typically a synthetic polymer or mineral, contains fixed charged sites. These sites are balanced by mobile ions of opposite charge. When a solution containing ions is passed through the ion exchange material, the mobile ions can be exchanged for ions present in the solution. For instance, in water softening, a cation exchange resin with sodium ions is used. When hard water containing calcium and magnesium ions flows through the resin, the calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged for sodium ions, thereby softening the water.

The capacity of an ion exchange material to hold ions is a critical parameter, often measured in milliequivalents per gram or milliequivalents per milliliter. The selectivity of the material for certain ions over others is also important, allowing for targeted separations. After the ion exchange material becomes saturated with the target ions, it can be regenerated by passing a concentrated solution of the original mobile ions through it, effectively reversing the exchange process and making the material reusable.

Ionikäsittelyt have numerous applications. They are essential in demineralizing water for power plants and laboratories, removing heavy metals from industrial wastewater, purifying pharmaceuticals, and separating valuable components in chemical manufacturing. The choice of ion exchange resin and operating conditions depends on the specific ions to be removed or separated and the desired purity of the treated solution.
