Ioneltávolítás, meaning "ion removal" in Hungarian, refers to processes or technologies designed to reduce or eliminate the concentration of ions within a liquid or gas. This can be achieved through various methods, each suited for different applications and types of ions.

One common method is ion exchange. This technique utilizes solid ion exchange resins, which are porous materials containing charged functional groups. When a liquid containing unwanted ions passes through the resin, the ions in the liquid are exchanged for ions on the resin. For example, in water purification, cation exchange resins can remove positively charged ions like calcium and magnesium, which cause hardness, by exchanging them for sodium ions.

Another approach is reverse osmosis. This is a membrane-based separation process where a semipermeable membrane allows solvent molecules (like water) to pass through but blocks larger solute molecules and ions. Applying pressure forces the solvent across the membrane, leaving the dissolved ions behind. This method is highly effective for desalination and producing ultrapure water.

Electrodialysis is another ion removal technology that uses ion-selective membranes and an electric field to move ions from one stream to another. It's particularly useful for concentrating or purifying solutions containing moderate to high concentrations of ions.
