Inégalitaire is the French adjective describing something that is characterized by inequality or that tends to promote unequal relations. Its root is égalité, equality, with the suffix -aire.

In social sciences and political discourse, inégalitaire describes policies, institutions, practices or norms that generate, reinforce, or tolerate unequal distributions of resources (income, education, power, influence) across individuals or groups. It may refer to both structural and procedural elements.

The concept is often contrasted with égalitaire or with egalitarian ideals. Discussions distinguish between equality of opportunity and equality of outcome, noting that inégalitaire arrangements can persist despite formal equality before the law. It is also used to analyze systemic issues such as class, gender, or ethnic disparities.

Examples include tax structures favoring capital, selective access to education, unequal access to healthcare, or biased criminal justice. Critics argue for reforms toward more inclusive policies to reduce inégalitaire effects, while proponents of market efficiency may defend existing arrangements as merit-based or natural.
