Intratype is a term used in several disciplines to denote variation that occurs within a single type or category, as opposed to differences between types (intertype variation). Because the term is not universally standardized, its precise meaning depends on the domain and context.

The word combines intra- meaning within and type. It is found in genetics, linguistics, and information science, among others. In each case, intratype describes heterogeneity that does not cross the boundary between distinct types.

In genomics and microbiology, intratype variation can describe genetic diversity among organisms assigned to the same type or clonal lineage, helping to refine phylogenetic relationships and track microevolution. In linguistics, it refers to variation within a single phoneme class, such as allophonic realizations. In information science, intratype constraints govern properties and behavior of entities categorized by the same data type.

Measurement and implications: Researchers use metrics such as sequence heterogeneity, polymorphism rate, or within-type dispersion to quantify intratype diversity. Recognizing intratype variation aids in robust classification, improves quality control, and informs theoretical models.
