Intrakortikal refers to something located or occurring within the cerebral cortex. The cerebral cortex is the outer layer of the cerebrum, the largest part of the human brain, and is responsible for higher-level cognitive functions such as thought, language, and memory. Processes that are described as intrakortikal happen specifically within the gray matter of this cortical layer. This can include neuronal activity, the spread of electrical signals, or the distribution of certain neurochemicals.
In neuroscience, the term intrakortikal is often used to differentiate processes that are confined to the cortex
