Intervalprogressie is a term used in music theory to describe how the sizes of intervals change as a melodic line or a harmonic sequence unfolds. It encompasses both melodic interval progressions, the succession of intervals between consecutive notes, and harmonic interval progressions, the pattern of intervallic relationships as chords or voices move.

In melodic practice, intervalprogressie helps define the contour of a melody. Music can move primarily by step (conjunct motion, mostly seconds) or by leaps (disjunct motion, thirds, fourths, fifths, or larger). The chosen interval pattern shapes the phrase, creates tension and release, and influences rhythm and articulation. Common interval progressions include sequences of seconds that propel motion, repeated thirds for a singable, warm line, or alternating steps with occasional leaps to emphasize a motif. Effective progression often aims for smooth voice leading, maintaining common tones and minimizing awkward leaps between adjacent voices.
