Interstittielle is not a widely established term in standard medical or scientific literature. It is commonly interpreted as a misspelling or a variant of the French adjective interstitielle, or, in English usage, of interstitial. In either case, the core idea relates to the interstitium—the network of spaces and tissues that lie between cells and are filled by interstitial fluid.

In anatomical and physiological contexts, interstitial refers to structures, processes, or fluids located in the interstitium. The interstitium forms the connective tissue framework of organs and supports exchange between cells and the circulatory system. Interstitial fluid, a component of the extracellular fluid, bathes cells and facilitates the transport of nutrients, gases, and wastes.

Medical relevance is broad. Interstitial processes can be involved in disease, such as interstitial nephritis affecting kidney tubules, and interstitial lung disease, a diverse group of disorders that damage the lung interstitium and impair gas exchange. Imaging may describe an interstitial pattern on chest radiographs or CT scans, indicating changes in the tissue spaces rather than the airways or air spaces themselves. Interstitial edema is swelling within the interstitium caused by fluid leakage from the microvasculature.

Beyond medicine, the term can appear in discussions of tissues and habitats where spaces between cells or particles are significant, including certain ecological or material contexts. The root is Latin interstitium, meaning “between or among the spaces.”
