Interoception is the physiological process by which the body perceives internal sensations, providing awareness of bodily states and internal environment. It involves the nervous system's ability to detect, interpret, and respond to signals originating from within the body, such as heartbeat, respiration, hunger, thirst, temperature, and visceral sensations. This sensory modality is fundamental to maintaining homeostasis and influences emotional and cognitive functions.

Interoceptive signals are transmitted primarily through afferent fibers of the autonomic nervous system, particularly via pathways such as the vagus nerve and spinal pathways to the brainstem and thalamus. The insular cortex, especially the anterior insula, is considered a central hub for processing interoceptive information. Other related brain areas include the anterior cingulate cortex and somatosensory cortices, which integrate and interpret internal signals to generate conscious awareness.

Research indicates that interoception plays a critical role in emotional regulation, decision-making, and self-awareness. Variations in interoceptive accuracy or sensitivity are associated with several psychological and physiological conditions, including anxiety disorders, depression, somatic symptom disorders, and eating disorders. Enhanced interoceptive awareness has been linked to better emotional regulation, while impaired interoception may contribute to difficulties in recognizing bodily signals.

Methods for assessing interoceptive accuracy include tasks such as heartbeat detection tests and questionnaires designed to measure subjective awareness of internal signals. Understanding interoception is an ongoing area of research, with implications for mental health and the development of therapeutic interventions targeting bodily awareness and emotional well-being.
