This mixing creates new, unwanted signals at frequencies that are sums and differences of the original frequencies and their harmonics. For example, if two signals at frequencies f1 and f2 are present, intermodulation products can appear at frequencies like f1 + f2, f1 - f2, 2f1 + f2, 2f1 - f2, f1 + 2f2, and f1 - 2f2, among others.

This effect is particularly problematic in electronic systems where multiple signals are processed simultaneously. Common areas where intermodulation is a concern include radio frequency (RF) transmitters and receivers, audio amplifiers, and telecommunications equipment. In RF systems, strong out-of-band signals can cause intermodulation distortion within a receiver, leading to interference that can mask desired signals or create false signals. In audio systems, intermodulation distortion can manifest as unwanted tonal coloration or a muddying of the sound.

The severity of intermodulation distortion is often characterized by a parameter called the Intermodulation Distortion (IMD) level, typically measured in decibels (dB) relative to the power of the original signals. Designing systems with highly linear components is crucial to minimize these unwanted byproducts and ensure signal integrity.
