Intermodulaatio refers to a phenomenon in electronics and telecommunications where two or more signals at different frequencies mix within a nonlinear system, producing new frequencies that are combinations of the original signals. This effect arises due to the nonlinear characteristics of components such as amplifiers, mixers, or transistors, where the output does not vary linearly with the input.

The process generates intermodulation products (IMPs) at frequencies that are sums and differences of the original signal frequencies. For example, if two input signals have frequencies *f₁* and *f₂*, intermodulation can produce frequencies such as *2f₁*, *f₁ + f₂*, *2f₂*, and *f₂ – f₁*. These unwanted frequencies can interfere with the desired signal, causing distortion, reduced signal quality, or even complete signal loss in sensitive applications.

Intermodulaatio is particularly problematic in communication systems, audio equipment, and radio frequency (RF) applications. In wireless networks, it can degrade signal integrity by introducing noise or overlapping with other channels. To mitigate intermodulaatio, engineers employ techniques such as linear amplification, proper filtering, and the use of high-quality components with low distortion characteristics. Additionally, careful frequency planning and shielding can minimize its impact.

The severity of intermodulaatio depends on factors such as the nonlinearity of the system, the power levels of the input signals, and the bandwidth of the signals involved. In some cases, intermodulaatio can be harnessed intentionally, as in frequency mixing circuits used in superheterodyne receivers or frequency multipliers. However, in most practical scenarios, it is considered an undesirable side effect that must be controlled to ensure optimal system performance.
