Interkalaattilevyillä, often translated as intercalated discs, are specialized structures found in cardiac muscle tissue. They are essential for the coordinated contraction of the heart. These microscopic connections serve to electrically and mechanically link adjacent cardiac muscle cells, known as cardiomyocytes.

Electrically, intercalated discs contain gap junctions. These are protein channels that allow ions to flow directly from one cell to another. This direct electrical coupling ensures that an action potential, or electrical impulse, generated in one cell can quickly spread to neighboring cells, causing them to contract in unison. This synchronized contraction is crucial for efficient pumping of blood by the heart.

Mechanically, intercalated discs are composed of fascia adherens and desmosomes. Fascia adherens anchor the thin filaments of the actin cytoskeleton of the sarcomeres, the basic contractile units of muscle cells, to the cell membrane. Desmosomes, on the other hand, are strong adhesive junctions that bind individual cardiomyocytes together, preventing them from pulling apart during the powerful contractions of the heart. Together, these mechanical connections provide structural integrity to the cardiac muscle tissue, allowing it to withstand the continuous mechanical stress of each heartbeat. The unique composition and arrangement of intercalated discs are fundamental to the functional syncytium that is the cardiac muscle.
