Interferonijärjestelmät, often referred to as the interferon system, represent a crucial component of the innate immune response in vertebrates. These systems are primarily composed of interferon proteins and their corresponding receptors, which work in concert to detect and combat viral infections and other intracellular threats. When a cell is infected by a virus, it can release interferons, signaling molecules that alert neighboring cells to the presence of the pathogen.

Upon binding to interferon receptors on healthy cells, interferons trigger a cascade of intracellular events that lead to the establishment of an antiviral state. This state involves the upregulation of various genes that encode for proteins with antiviral activities, such as enzymes that degrade viral RNA or inhibit viral protein synthesis. Interferons also play a role in modulating the adaptive immune response by enhancing the activity of lymphocytes, including natural killer cells and cytotoxic T cells, which are essential for clearing infected cells.

There are several types of interferons, broadly classified into Type I, Type II, and Type III interferons, each with distinct roles and expression patterns. Type I interferons, which include alpha, beta, and omega interferons, are the most widely studied and are rapidly produced by infected cells. Type II interferon, gamma interferon, is mainly produced by immune cells and plays a significant role in immune regulation. Type III interferons, lambda interferons, are primarily expressed in epithelial cells and provide localized antiviral protection. The interferon system's ability to mount a rapid and broad defense against pathogens is fundamental to host survival.
