Inter-specific interactions are ecological relationships that occur between individuals of different species. The standard term is interspecific, derived from Latin inter- “between” and species. The form interestspecific is a misspelling or uncommon variant; the correct usage is interspecific (or inter-specific when hyphenated).

Interacting relationships are often described by their effects on the participants. Major categories include predation and herbivory (one organism benefits while the other is harmed); parasitism (parasite benefits, host harmed); competition (both species suffer when sharing a limited resource); mutualism (both benefit). Less symmetric interactions include commensalism (one benefits, the other is neutral) and amensalism (one is harmed, the other unaffected). Interactions can be direct or indirect and may vary with context such as resource availability, population density, and life stages.

In ecosystems, interspecific interactions influence species distributions, abundances, and community structure. They drive niche differentiation and can lead to coevolution, competitive exclusion, or trophic cascades. Mutualisms such as pollinators and flowering plants, seed dispersers, and mycorrhizal fungi are key for ecosystem functioning, while predator–prey dynamics help regulate populations. Invasive species can alter networks of interspecific interactions, with cascading effects on native communities.
