It is distinct from multidisciplinary work, which combines disciplinary contributions without aiming for integration, and from transdisciplinarity, which seeks to involve non-academic stakeholders and create new concepts that emerge from collaboration itself.

Historically, interdisciplinaria gained prominence in the late 20th century as societal problems—such as environmental degradation, public health, and technological risk—demanded holistic analysis. Universities and research funders increasingly support institutes and programs that foster cross-disciplinary teams.

Practices include forming joint research agendas, developing shared theoretical or methodological frameworks, and using mixed methods. Successful projects often establish common vocabularies, interoperable data, and regular communication to align goals.

Applications span climate science, urban planning, health systems, education, and digital humanities. Benefits include more robust solutions and policy relevance; challenges involve differing epistemologies, incentive structures in academia, funding fragmentation, and difficulties in evaluating interdisciplinary outputs.
