An intent constraint is a constraint embedded in a system’s decision-making or interpretation process to ensure that its actions, outputs, or interpretations align with a specified goal or user intention. It encodes the intended purpose behind an action and helps prune options that would violate that purpose.

Intent constraints appear across fields such as automated planning, constraint programming, natural language processing, and human–computer interaction. In planning and optimization, they restrict feasible plans to those that achieve the stated objective within resource or policy limits. In NLP and dialogue systems, they help steer generation or interpretation toward responses that match the user’s stated aims, such as being informative, helpful, or non-disclosive. In data governance and privacy, intent constraints can express purposes of data use or consent boundaries to prevent unintended disclosure or misuse.

Formally, an intent constraint is often represented as a predicate, a logical formula, or as part of an objective function within a solver or planner. Constraints can be hard (must be satisfied under all circumstances) or soft (penalized if violated). They can be enforced directly in search, incorporated into optimization problems (as equalities or inequalities), or modeled as policy checks during runtime.

Examples include a delivery planner that must achieve a shipment goal without exceeding budget, a dialogue system that should not reveal private information, or a recommender that prioritizes results aligned with a user’s stated intent.
