intelectin

Intelectin, also known as intelectin-1 or HL-10, is a protein encoded by the ITLN gene in humans. It is a member of the chitinase-like protein family, though it lacks the enzymatic activity of true chitinases. Intelectin is primarily expressed in the epithelial cells of the intestine, lung, and other mucosal tissues.

This protein plays a significant role in the innate immune system. It is secreted into the lumen of the intestine and has been shown to bind to bacterial cell wall components, such as lipopolysaccharides and peptidoglycans. This binding can inhibit bacterial growth and prevent the adherence of bacteria to the intestinal epithelium, thereby contributing to the defense against pathogens. Intelectin can also interact with host immune cells, modulating inflammatory responses.

Research suggests that intelectin may also be involved in other physiological processes. It has been implicated in cell differentiation and proliferation, and its expression can be altered in certain disease states, including inflammatory bowel disease and certain types of cancer.
