Instrumentaltype is a proposed typological label used in linguistics to describe how languages encode instrumentality—the means by which an agent performs an action. The term refers to the set of morphological, syntactic, and lexical strategies a language uses to mark or express the instrument or means employed in an event. It is not a universal category, but a convenient way to compare how languages realize instrumental relations across their grammars.

Realizations of instrumentaltype vary widely. In some languages, instrumentality is marked by a dedicated instrumental case on nouns or pronouns. In others, adpositions or postpositions indicate the instrument, often with noun inflection that aligns with the case system. Some languages rely on periphrastic constructions, including verbs or serial verb sequences, to express instrumentality. Instrumentaltype interactions frequently involve factors such as definiteness, animacy, and word order, and they can coexist with other grammatical means of expressing means or agency.

Examples help illustrate the idea. Russian employs an instrumental case to express instruments: Я пишу ручкой (I write with a pen), where ручкой is in the instrumental form of ручка. Turkish typically marks instrument through a postpositional or agglutinative strategy such as kalemle (with a pen), followed by the verb: Kalemle yazıyorum. Languages with instrumentaltype vary in how strictly they bind the instrument to the noun morphology, to adpositions, or to verbal syntax, reflecting broader typological diversity in expressing means.
