Inspirations are signals or experiences that spark ideas, feelings, or actions in a creator, thinker, or learner. The term connotes a moment or source that makes something possible—often a seed rather than a finished result. Etymologically, inspiration comes from the Latin inspirare, meaning to breathe into, highlighting the sense of an inward spark.

Sources of inspiration can be external or internal. External sources include nature, people, art, literature, music, conversations, travel, news, and technology. Internal sources include memory, desire, values, dreams, curiosity, and emotion. Inspiration may arise from a striking scene, a problem to solve, or an unexpected coincidence.

Cognition plays a role in how inspiration develops. It involves attention, flexible thinking, mood, and sometimes incubation, allowing ideas to form connections. Because inspiration can be fleeting, many people curate it with journals, mood boards, playlists, or idea notebooks to capture and revisit stimuli later.

Historically and culturally, inspiration has been treated as both a secular and a sacred force. In ancient Greece, muses were considered sources of creative impulse; later traditions describe inspiration as a divine or transcendent influence, while modern usage often treats it as a practical resource that kick-starts effort and skill.
