Inklinometers are instruments used to measure angles of inclination or declination relative to gravity. When the instrument's base tilts, the pendulous mass, due to inertia, attempts to maintain its original orientation. The displacement of this mass is then measured by a sensing mechanism, which translates this movement into an electrical signal proportional to the angle of tilt.

Various sensing technologies can be employed. Some inklinometers utilize capacitive sensors, where the movement of the pendulum changes the capacitance between plates. Others use inductive sensors, where the pendulum alters the magnetic field. More advanced types may use MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) accelerometers, which directly measure the component of gravity acting along their sensitive axes. The output is typically an analog voltage or a digital signal that can be read by a data acquisition system.

Inklinometers find application in a wide range of fields.
