The term "infrastrukturisten" was coined by the German sociologist and philosopher Siegfried J. Schmidt in the 1990s. Schmidt argued that infrastructure is not merely a technical artifact but a social construct that shapes and is shaped by societal values, norms, and power dynamics. This perspective has since been adopted and expanded upon by scholars in various disciplines, including sociology, anthropology, political science, and critical theory.

Infrastrukturisten research often explores themes such as the politics of infrastructure, the role of infrastructure in shaping urban and rural landscapes, and the social and environmental impacts of infrastructure projects. It also examines the ways in which infrastructure is used to enforce and maintain social control, such as through surveillance technologies and border control systems.

One of the key contributions of infrastrukturisten is its critique of the notion of "neutrality" in infrastructure design and implementation. This critique challenges the idea that infrastructure can be designed and built in a value-free manner, and instead highlights the ways in which infrastructure is shaped by and shapes power relations.
