Inflaatio-deflaatio is a descriptive label used in economics to describe price dynamics in which inflation and deflation occur within the same economy. It can refer to sectoral divergence, where some prices rise while others fall, or to alternating periods of inflation and deflation over time. The term is more common in Finnish-language discussions and is used to summarize complex price movements that a single inflation figure may not capture.

Patterns associated with inflaatio-deflaatio include sectoral divergence, where components such as energy or housing costs increase while electronics or apparel decline, and time-varying movements, where the overall price level trends up during some periods and down during others. Analysts may observe a rising price index in certain components while deflation occurs in others, producing a mixed signal in headline measures.

Causes are varied. Supply shocks that raise input costs can drive inflation in specific sectors while productivity gains, competitive pressure, or demand weakness push other prices lower. Monetary and fiscal policy, exchange rate movements, and structural changes in the economy can also create or amplify mixed price signals across sectors.

Measurement and policy implications. Headline inflation may mask sectoral deflation, complicating policy responses. Central banks aiming for price stability can face a dual challenge when some prices rise while others fall; borrowers may benefit from deflation in some goods but suffer from higher real debt burdens if wages do not keep pace.
