Inferral is the process of deriving a conclusion from evidence, premises, or prior knowledge. In academic usage, inferral is often treated as synonymous with inference, the operation of drawing logical or probable conclusions from data and rules. The term appears in philosophy, linguistics, statistics, artificial intelligence, and everyday reasoning.

In some contexts, inferral is distinguished as the practitioner’s cognitive act of arriving at a conclusion, with inference as the broader logical relation or mechanism. Regardless of terminology, inferral spans deductive reasoning (where conclusions follow with certainty from premises), inductive reasoning (where conclusions are probabilistic), abductive reasoning (inference to the best explanation), and probabilistic inference in statistics and machine learning.

In linguistics and discourse analysis, inferral describes the process by which listeners interpret implicit meaning, tone, or implications not explicitly stated. In science and data analysis, inferral refers to estimating parameters, states, or hypotheses from observations, often using models that encode uncertainty. In artificial intelligence, inferral encompasses algorithms that infer labels, structures, or causal relations from data.

Limitations include reliance on the quality of premises, background knowledge, and model assumptions; conclusions may be tentative or revised with new evidence. Fallibility arises from incomplete data, bias, or incorrect modeling.
