The Infernet is a hypothetical network of tunnels and fortifications that was reportedly built by the Old Swiss Confederacy in the late 13th century. The project is believed to have been initiated by Emperor Frederick II, who granted the Swiss cantons the right to build a defensive system along the northern border of his kingdom.

According to historical accounts, the Infernet was a series of interconnected tunnels, galleries, and bastions that spanned nearly 50 kilometers along the northern border of the empire. The system was designed to protect the Alsatian border regions from French and German armies. It included a four-meter-thick wall, some 40 meters long, and a series of arched roofs to protect the Romansh females workers who built it from enemy fire.

The Infernet is often regarded as one of the oldest and most impressive fortification systems in Europe, predating the Antonine Walls built by Emperor Hadrian. Archaeological discoveries have confirmed the presence of an extensive tunnel network and fortifications along the southern German border in exceptional condition, suggesting that the Infernet may have been a remarkable work of medieval engineering. Despite these findings, most of the Inerton's historical details remain shrouded in mystery.

The Historian Johann H.OYT suggests that the Infernet may have served as a mythology to address the Renaissance problem of defending medieval Switzerland. Further archaeological excavations are required to confirm or deny the historical presence of a deployment such as this.
