An inessive adverbial is a grammatical category used in languages that mark location with an inessive case. It refers to the use of a noun marked in the inessive case as an adverbial modifier of a verb, sentence, or clause, typically expressing location inside something.

In usage, the inessive adverbial conveys a locative meaning equivalent to “in” or “inside.” The same inessive form frequently functions both as a nominal locative and as an adverbial phrase, modifying the action of the sentence rather than just a noun. Some languages allow the inessive adverbial to carry additional shades of meaning, such as within the boundaries of a domain or, metaphorically, within a scope or context.

Morphology and syntax vary by language. In languages with rich locative systems, the noun is marked with an inessive suffix and can appear with or without accompanying postpositions or demonstratives. It is typically positioned to modify the verb or the entire clause, producing phrases like “in the house” that specify where an action occurs. In Finnish, for example, talossa means “in the house” and can serve as a place adverbial (Hän asui talossa). Hungarian offers házban for “in the house” in similar adverbial use (A fiú a házban van). Estonian provides toas meaning “in the room.” Not all languages use a distinct inessive adverbial; some rely on prepositions or other locative markers.
