Indsugningskanaler, also known as intake manifolds, are components in internal combustion engines responsible for distributing the air-fuel mixture or just air to the individual cylinders. The design and configuration of an intake manifold significantly influence an engine's performance, particularly its torque and horsepower output across different RPM ranges.

Typically, intake manifolds are cast from materials like aluminum or cast iron, although plastic and composite materials are also used, especially in modern engines for weight reduction and improved thermal insulation. The manifold connects to the cylinder head at the intake ports, and its internal passages are carefully shaped to ensure even distribution of the charge to each cylinder. Uneven distribution can lead to performance issues and reduced fuel efficiency.

Factors such as runner length, diameter, and volume play a crucial role in optimizing airflow. Longer runners tend to favor low-end torque by increasing air velocity at lower engine speeds, while shorter, larger-diameter runners are better suited for high-end horsepower due to their ability to flow more air at higher engine speeds. Variable intake manifold designs exist, which can alter runner length or volume dynamically to optimize performance across a wider RPM range.

The intake manifold also houses components like fuel injectors (in port fuel injection systems) and throttle bodies, which regulate the amount of air entering the engine. Emissions control systems and sensors are also often integrated into or connected to the intake manifold assembly. The overall efficiency and breathing of an engine are directly impacted by the design and flow characteristics of its intake manifold.
