An indorse, also spelled endorse, is a signature or a notation on the back of a document, typically a check or other negotiable instrument, that signifies agreement or approval. When applied to a check, an indorsement generally transfers ownership or authorizes payment. The most common form of indorsement is a blank indorsement, which simply involves the payee's signature. This makes the instrument payable to anyone who possesses it.

A special indorsement, also known as a full indorsement, names a specific person or entity to whom the instrument is now payable. For example, "Pay to the order of [Name]" followed by the indorser's signature. This offers greater security as only the named payee can further negotiate the instrument. A restrictive indorsement limits the use of the instrument, such as "For deposit only" or "Pay to [Name] for collection." This type of indorsement ensures the funds are used for a specific purpose.

Beyond financial documents, the term "indorse" can also mean to publicly approve of or support someone or something. For instance, a politician might indorse a candidate, or a celebrity might indorse a product. In this context, it signifies a public declaration of support or recommendation. The act of indorsement creates a legal or social commitment on the part of the indorser.
