indirgenmez

Indirgenmez is a Turkish term meaning not reducible or irreducible. In mathematical usage, it describes an object that cannot be decomposed into a product or composition of simpler, non-unit components within a given algebraic structure. The exact definition depends on the context.

In a multiplicative commutative ring with unity, an element a is indirgenmez if it is not a unit and whenever a = bc, then either b or c is a unit. Equivalently, a is not factorizable into non-unit factors. This notion captures the idea that the element cannot be broken down into simpler, nontrivial factors within the ring.

In polynomial rings over a field F, a nonconstant polynomial f(x) in F[x] is indirgenmez if it cannot be written as a product f(x) = g(x)h(x) with polynomials g and h of strictly positive degree. Such polynomials are called irreducible polynomials over F. The concept is central to factorization theory and underpins the study of extensions in algebra.

Irreducibility is related to, but distinct from, primality. In general rings, an irreducible element need not be prime; in a unique factorization domain, irreducibles and primes align. Examples include the integer 2 in Z, which is irreducible (and prime), and the polynomial x^2+1 over the real numbers R, which is irreducible in R[x] but factors over C[x].
