Incubation refers to the process of maintaining eggs at a suitable temperature and humidity to allow for the embryonic development and hatching of young. This can occur naturally, where an adult animal, typically the female, sits on its eggs to provide warmth and protection. In many bird species, incubation involves regular turning of the eggs by the parent to ensure even development and prevent the embryo from sticking to the shell.

Artificial incubation utilizes technology to replicate these conditions. Incubators, which are specialized devices, are used to control temperature, humidity, and ventilation. These are commonly employed in poultry farming for commercial production of chicks and ducklings. The precise temperature required varies depending on the species, but is generally maintained within a narrow range. Humidity levels are also critical, influencing the rate of water loss from the egg and the ease with which the chick can break through the shell. Proper ventilation ensures a consistent supply of oxygen and removal of carbon dioxide.

The duration of incubation, known as the incubation period, also differs significantly among species. For chickens, it is approximately 21 days, while for ducks and geese it can be longer.
