Impressziók, also known as impressions, are a type of art movement that emerged in the late 19th century, primarily in France. The term "impressionism" was coined by a group of Paris-based artists who exhibited their independent works together from 1874 onwards. The movement is characterized by its focus on accurate depiction of light and color, often employing visible brush strokes and a fluid, almost spontaneous technique. This approach was a departure from the academic art of the time, which emphasized precise detail and formal composition.

The Impressionists sought to capture the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere, rather than the precise details of their subjects. This was achieved through the use of small, thin brushes and the application of paint in visible, often overlapping strokes. The movement's name was a criticism by the art critic Louis Leroy, who described the Impressionists' exhibition as "impressionniste" (impressionistic), meaning that the works gave the viewer an impression rather than a clear, detailed picture.

Key figures of the Impressionist movement include Claude Monet, who is renowned for his series of paintings of water lilies and his depictions of nature under different lighting conditions. Other notable artists include Pierre-Auguste Renoir, known for his lively and colorful scenes of modern life, and Edgar Degas, who specialized in capturing the dance and movement of people. Camille Pissarro, though not as well-known as some of his contemporaries, was a significant contributor to the movement, often working alongside Monet and Renoir.

The Impressionists' works were initially met with controversy and criticism, but they have since become some of the most celebrated and influential in the history of art. Their innovative techniques and focus on light and color have had a lasting impact on the development of modern art.
