Impregnat is a term used in materials science and industry to denote a liquid or semi-liquid substance designed to penetrate into the pores of porous materials. The main purpose of an impregnant is to fill voids with a material that modifies properties such as moisture resistance, dimensional stability, chemical resistance or mechanical strength. The process of applying an impregnant is called impregnation.

Impregnants come in various forms, including solvent-based, water-based, oil-based and resinous products. Common classes include wood preservatives and sealer fluids that penetrate timber, epoxy or polyester resins used for electrical insulation and composite reinforcement, silicone- or silane-based treatments for moisture repellence, and wax-like or oil-based treatments that reduce porosity in textiles or papers.

Applications span several industries. In woodworking, impregnants protect against decay, insects, and weathering and can increase hardness or reduce swelling. In textiles and paper, impregnants improve water resistance, stiffness or dimensional stability. In electronics, resinous impregnants are used to fill and insulate intricate winding or components to prevent moisture ingress and arcing. Concrete and masonry may be treated with penetrating sealants to reduce water absorption and freeze–thaw damage. Impregnation can be performed by immersion, vacuum impregnation, or pressure-assisted methods, depending on material and product.

Safety and environmental concerns vary with composition. Some impregnants are flammable, toxic, or may release volatile organic compounds, requiring proper ventilation, protective equipment, and careful disposal. Environmental considerations include longevity, leaching, and the fate of residual chemicals in treated materials.
