It involves adjusting the impedance of the source and the load so that they are equal. When the impedances are matched, the maximum possible power is delivered from the source to the load. Conversely, if the impedances are mismatched, some of the signal energy will be reflected back towards the source, leading to signal loss and potential distortion.
This principle is particularly important in applications involving radio frequency (RF) circuits, transmission lines, and antennas.
