Impattamento is an Italian term denoting the action of impact or collision and the resulting effect on a system. It is used across multiple disciplines to describe both the event of two bodies striking each other and the consequences that follow, including forces, energy transfer, and structural response. The word often appears in technical, scientific, and engineering contexts, as well as in geology and planetary science.

In physics and engineering, impattamento refers to the interaction when momentum is exchanged during a contact, characterized by impulse, contact duration, and peak forces. The outcome depends on properties such as mass, velocity, material stiffness, and the coefficient of restitution. In automotive safety, impattamento between a vehicle and obstacle generates occupant loads that safety systems seek to mitigate.

In materials science, tests of impattamento, or impact tests, measure toughness by quantifying the energy absorbed to fracture a specimen, as in Charpy or Izod tests. These tests help classify materials and design components to withstand sudden loads.
