Impact assessments are systematic processes used to identify, predict, evaluate, and mitigate the potential environmental, social, and economic effects of proposed projects or policies before decisions are made. The primary goal is to inform decision-making by providing a comprehensive understanding of likely consequences.

These assessments can take various forms, including environmental impact assessments (EIAs), social impact assessments (SIAs), and economic impact assessments (EcIAs). EIAs focus on the physical and biological environment, such as air and water quality, biodiversity, and land use. SIAs examine the potential effects on communities, including displacement, cultural heritage, public health, and employment. EcIAs analyze the economic implications, such as job creation, local business development, and changes in public revenue.

The process typically involves several stages: screening to determine if an assessment is required, scoping to define the key issues and alternatives to be studied, impact analysis to predict and evaluate the significance of potential effects, mitigation measures to propose ways to avoid, reduce, or compensate for negative impacts, and reporting and consultation to present findings and gather feedback from stakeholders. The outcomes of an impact assessment inform regulatory bodies and project proponents, guiding whether a project should proceed, and if so, under what conditions.
