Immuunterapeutilisi is a term used in some languages to denote the field and practice of immunotherapy, the medical strategy of harnessing the immune system to treat disease. In English, the concept is usually called immunotherapy or immunotherapeutics, with the aim of enhancing, directing, or restoring immune responses.

The field encompasses diverse approaches, including monoclonal antibodies that target disease-associated antigens; immune checkpoint inhibitors that unleash T cells (for example anti-PD-1/PD-L1 or anti-CTLA-4 therapies); adoptive cell therapies such as CAR-T or TCR-engineered cells; cancer vaccines; oncolytic viruses; cytokine therapies; and bispecific T-cell engagers. Dendritic cell and natural killer cell therapies are also under investigation.

Mechanistically, these therapies either boost immune recognition, remove inhibitory signals, or redirect immune effector cells to disease targets. Primary applications are in cancer, but immunotherapeutic approaches are explored for infectious diseases, autoimmune disorders, allergic conditions, and transplant settings.

Treatments are typically delivered intravenously or regionally in specialized centers, with careful monitoring for immune-related adverse events. These can include inflammation of various organs, dermatologic or endocrine effects, and, in some cases, cytokine release syndrome. Biomarkers such as PD-L1 expression and tumor mutational burden inform patient selection in some contexts.

Regulatory status varies by country, but many immunotherapies have obtained approvals and other agents are in late-stage trials. Ongoing work focuses on optimizing combinations, reducing toxicity, identifying predictive biomarkers, and expanding indications while addressing cost and access issues.

Future directions include more personalized immunotherapies, novel targets, and strategies to overcome resistance, with an emphasis on safety, equity, and integration into standard medical care.
