Immunszuppresszió, also known as immunosuppression, refers to a reduction in the activation or efficacy of the immune system. This can occur intentionally, as in the use of immunosuppressant drugs to prevent organ transplant rejection or to treat autoimmune diseases, or unintentionally, as a consequence of certain infections, nutritional deficiencies, or other medical conditions.

Intentional immunosuppression is a critical therapeutic strategy. After an organ transplant, the recipient's immune system naturally recognizes the new organ as foreign and attempts to attack it. Immunosuppressant medications are administered to dampen this immune response, thereby increasing the chances of the transplanted organ surviving and functioning. Similarly, in autoimmune diseases, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues, immunosuppressive drugs can be used to reduce this harmful activity. Examples of conditions treated with immunosuppressants include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Unintentional immunosuppression can leave an individual more vulnerable to infections. Certain viruses, such as HIV, directly target and destroy immune cells, leading to profound immunosuppression and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Malnutrition, particularly deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals, can also impair immune function. Some medical treatments, like chemotherapy for cancer, are designed to kill rapidly dividing cells, and this can inadvertently affect immune cells, leading to a weakened immune system during treatment. The degree of immunosuppression and its clinical implications vary widely depending on the cause and severity.
