Imendusrakud, also known as stem cells, are undifferentiated or partially differentiated cells that can differentiate into various types of specialized cells and can divide indefinitely to produce more of the same stem cell. This property of self-renewal is a defining characteristic of stem cells. There are several types of stem cells, broadly categorized by their potential to differentiate. Totipotent stem cells can differentiate into all cell types, including extraembryonic tissues. Pluripotent stem cells can differentiate into any cell type of the three germ layers, but not extraembryonic tissues. Multipotent stem cells can differentiate into a limited range of cell types. Unipotent stem cells can only differentiate into one cell type.

Stem cells are crucial for development and tissue regeneration. During embryonic development, they give rise to all the specialized cells that form an organism. In adult organisms, stem cells act as a repair system, replenishing specialized cells that are lost through normal wear and tear, injury, or disease. For instance, hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow produce all types of blood cells.

Research into stem cells, particularly embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), holds significant promise for regenerative medicine. iPSCs are adult cells that have been reprogrammed to an embryonic stem cell-like state, offering a potential source of patient-specific stem cells without the ethical concerns associated with embryonic stem cells. The therapeutic potential of stem cells lies in their ability to replace damaged tissues and organs, treating conditions such as Parkinson's disease, diabetes, spinal cord injuries, and heart disease. However, research is ongoing to fully understand their mechanisms and ensure their safe and effective clinical application.
