Ilmastointilaitteilla, commonly referred to as air conditioning systems, are devices designed to control and regulate the temperature and humidity of an indoor environment. They achieve this by removing heat and moisture from the air. The fundamental principle behind most air conditioning systems involves a refrigeration cycle. This cycle uses a refrigerant to absorb heat from the indoor air and release it outside.

The main components of a typical air conditioning system include an evaporator coil, a compressor, a condenser coil, and an expansion valve. The evaporator coil is located inside the building, where it absorbs heat from the warm indoor air. The refrigerant then flows to the compressor, which increases its pressure and temperature. From the compressor, the hot, high-pressure refrigerant moves to the condenser coil, usually located outdoors, where it releases heat to the outside air. Finally, the expansion valve reduces the pressure of the refrigerant, preparing it to absorb more heat in the evaporator.

Air conditioning systems can be categorized into several types, including central air conditioning, split systems, and window units. Central air conditioning systems cool an entire building through a network of ducts. Split systems, often used for individual rooms or smaller areas, consist of an indoor unit and an outdoor unit. Window units are self-contained devices installed in a window or wall opening. Beyond cooling, many air conditioning systems also offer features like dehumidification, ventilation, and heating. Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance and longevity of these systems.
