Ilmastointijäähdyttimet, often translated as air conditioners or cooling units, are devices designed to reduce the temperature of an indoor space. They function by removing heat and humidity from the air. The basic principle involves a refrigeration cycle, which uses a refrigerant to absorb heat from the indoor air and then release it outside.

A typical air conditioning system consists of several key components: an evaporator coil, a compressor, a condenser coil, and an expansion valve. The evaporator coil is located inside the space to be cooled, where it absorbs heat from the air. The compressor then pressurizes the refrigerant, increasing its temperature. This hot refrigerant flows to the condenser coil, usually located outdoors, where it releases heat to the outside air. Finally, the expansion valve reduces the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant before it returns to the evaporator coil, completing the cycle.

Air conditioners are widely used in residential, commercial, and industrial settings to provide thermal comfort and preserve sensitive equipment. They vary in size and capacity, from small portable units to large central air conditioning systems. Energy efficiency is a significant factor in air conditioner design and selection, with ratings like SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) indicating how effectively a unit uses electricity. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning filters and checking refrigerant levels, is important for optimal performance and longevity of the cooling unit.
