The system typically consists of a furnace or heat pump, a blower fan, and a thermostat. The thermostat monitors the indoor temperature and signals the furnace or heat pump to turn on when the temperature drops below a set point. The furnace or heat pump heats the air, and the blower fan then pushes the heated air through the ductwork to the various rooms in the house. Vents in each room allow the heated air to enter, while return ducts carry cooler air back to the furnace or heat pump to be reheated.

One of the primary advantages of ilmalämmitys is its ability to quickly heat a space. The forced circulation of air means that heat can be distributed rapidly throughout the house. It also offers the flexibility of integrating air conditioning, humidification, and dehumidification systems into the same ductwork, providing year-round comfort control. However, ilmalämmitys systems also have some drawbacks. The ductwork can be a source of energy loss if it is not properly sealed, leading to heated air escaping before it reaches its intended destination. Dust and allergens can also accumulate in the ducts, potentially affecting indoor air quality, though regular cleaning and filter replacement can mitigate this issue. The initial installation cost can also be a factor, especially for new constructions or when extensive ductwork modifications are required.
