ilmaisus

Ilmaisus is a theoretical construct used in semiotics and linguistics to denote the observable manifestation of meaning in a given medium. It refers to how concepts, emotions, or intentions are conveyed through form, style, and delivery, rather than through content alone. In linguistics, ilmaisus encompasses features such as tone, rhythm, phrasing, and prosody; in visual or performing arts, it covers gesture, color, and composition that carry expressive weight.

Derived from Finnish ilmaisu 'expression', ilmaisus is mostly encountered in Finnish-language scholarship and theoretical discourse, where it is often contrasted with ilmaisun sisältö (the content of expression) to distinguish how something is expressed from what is expressed.

Researchers analyze ilmaisus to understand audience interpretation, stylistic variation, or cultural norms; comparisons across genres or media reveal how ilmaisus modulates perception and meaning.
