Iliac region refers to the anatomical area of the abdomen located superior to the inguinal ligament and inferior to the costal margin. It is divided into two iliac fossae, the right and the left, which contain the iliacus muscles. These muscles play a crucial role in hip flexion and posture. The bony structures forming the iliac region are the ilium, which is part of the pelvis.

Clinically, the iliac region is important for palpating abdominal organs, particularly the cecum and appendix in the right iliac fossa, and the sigmoid colon in the left iliac fossa. Pain in the right iliac region is a classic symptom of appendicitis, although other conditions can also cause discomfort in this area. The iliac arteries and veins, major blood vessels supplying the lower extremities, also course through this region.

The lymphatic drainage of the abdominal organs and lower extremities involves the iliac lymph nodes, which are situated within the iliac fossae. Surgical procedures involving the pelvic organs or lower limbs often require consideration of the anatomy and vascular supply of the iliac region. Understanding the iliac region is fundamental in both anatomical studies and the diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions.
