Ikonográfiához is a Hungarian term that translates to "iconography" in English. Iconography, in a broad sense, refers to the study, identification, and interpretation of the subject matter of works of art, by means of studying the content of a work, its symbols, its themes, and its narratives. It is a method of interpretation of art that goes beyond simply describing the visual elements of an artwork. Instead, it seeks to understand the meaning embedded within the imagery, often by examining historical, religious, and cultural contexts.

The practice of iconography involves recognizing recurring visual motifs, symbols, and figures that carry specific meanings within a particular tradition or period. For example, in Christian art, the lamb is an iconographic symbol of Christ, the dove represents the Holy Spirit, and specific gestures or postures can convey theological concepts. Similarly, in secular art, certain objects or animals might represent abstract ideas like virtue, vice, or political allegiances.

Iconography is particularly important in understanding religious art, where images often served didactic or devotional purposes, conveying complex theological doctrines to a wider audience. Art historians use iconographic analysis to decipher the intended messages of artists and patrons, to understand the cultural milieu in which the art was created, and to trace the evolution of artistic conventions and symbolism over time.
