ijsdek is the Dutch term for a layer of ice that forms on the surface of water when air temperatures fall below freezing. It occurs in natural environments such as lakes, rivers, and seas and varies with season and location. Formation is influenced by air temperature, water temperature, salinity, wind, and currents. Freshwater ice on lakes tends to be clear or cloudy depending on trapped air and sediments; sea ice shows more variety with stages such as nilas, young ice, first-year ice, and multiyear ice.

Ice thickness can range from a few centimeters on small ponds to several decimeters on lakes, and from tens of centimeters to many meters in polar seas, with substantial regional variation. The properties of ijsdek affect heat exchange, light penetration, and gas transfer between water and the atmosphere, thereby influencing aquatic ecosystems. It also provides a physical barrier that alters habitat availability and can protect the water body from wind-driven heat loss, while also posing risks during breakup and melting.

Monitoring ice cover combines ground observations, ice-thickness measurements with augers or probes, and remote sensing by satellites and aircraft. Accurate assessment of ijsdek conditions is important for winter recreation, transportation safety, and climate research, as changes in ice extent and thickness reflect the energy balance of aquatic systems and, on a larger scale, polar regions.
