There are two primary methods of in-situ oil sands extraction: steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) and cyclic steam stimulation (CSS). In SAGD, steam is injected into the oil sands deposit to heat it and reduce its viscosity, allowing the oil to drain by gravity. In CSS, steam is injected into the deposit in a cyclic manner, with each cycle consisting of a steam injection period followed by a soak period. The steam heats the oil sands and reduces its viscosity, allowing the oil to drain and be collected.

In-situ oil sands extraction has several advantages over conventional oil extraction methods. It can be used to extract oil from deposits that are too deep or thick for surface mining, and it can be more environmentally friendly than conventional methods because it does not involve the large-scale disturbance of the landscape that is associated with surface mining. However, in-situ methods also have disadvantages, such as the potential for greenhouse gas emissions and the need for large amounts of water and steam.

The future of in-situ oil sands extraction is uncertain, as it is a relatively new and unproven technology. However, if it can be made more efficient and environmentally friendly, it could play a significant role in the global oil industry.
