Ideaalit is the plural form of ideaali, a Finnish noun meaning ideals or normative standards. The concept is used in philosophy, ethics, politics, and everyday language to refer to aspirational goals or exemplary standards that people or societies aim to realize.

In philosophy and the social sciences, ideals describe normative goals such as justice, freedom, equality, or beauty. They function as guiding principles, shaping values, policies, and personal conduct. Ideaalit can be contested when aspirations clash with practical constraints or with lived experience.

In mathematics, ideaalit refer to ideals—subsets of rings that are closed under addition and under multiplication by any element of the ring. They underpin constructions such as quotient rings and connect algebra to geometry and number theory. An example is the principal ideal (n) in the ring of integers, consisting of all multiples of n.

Historically, the concept of ideals has varied by discipline, from ethical ideals in political theory to mathematical ideals in algebra. In everyday language, ideals remain high standards that people use to judge actions and institutions, even when those standards are difficult to attain.
