An iconographer is a creator of icons, especially in Christian traditions, or more broadly a scholar who studies iconography, the analysis of visual symbols and motifs in art. In religious contexts, iconographers produce images intended for veneration or liturgical use, while in art history the term may refer to researchers who document and interpret iconographic programs.

Historically, iconography has been central to Byzantine and Eastern Orthodox art, where iconographers worked within established canons and liturgical rules. Training often occurred within monastic communities or guilds, emphasizing prayer, fasting, and apprenticeship.

Techniques involve tempera on wood panels, gesso grounds, gold leaf, and mineral pigments, with a focus on careful line, color symbolism, and adherence to established iconographic formulas. Subjects include Christ, the Virgin Mary, saints, and biblical scenes.

Today, iconographers work in religious communities, museums, and private studios, and the field is studied by art historians as well as practitioners who preserve traditional canons while adapting to contemporary contexts.
