Hüdrooksiidide is a term used in chemistry to describe compounds that contain at least one hydroxyl group (OH) bonded to a metal atom. These substances are generally classified as bases. When dissolved in water, many hüdrooksiidide compounds dissociate to release hydroxide ions (OH⁻), which are responsible for their basic properties. The strength of a hüdrooksiidide as a base depends on the metal it is bonded to and the solubility of the compound.

Common examples of hüdrooksiidide include sodium hydroxide (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH), and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂). Sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide are strong, highly soluble bases, while calcium hydroxide is a weaker base with limited solubility. Many transition metals also form hüdrooksiidide, such as iron(III) hydroxide (Fe(OH)₃) and copper(II) hydroxide (Cu(OH)₂). These are typically less soluble and exhibit weaker basicity compared to alkali metal hüdrooksiidide.

Hüdrooksiidide have numerous applications. Sodium hydroxide is widely used in the production of soap, paper, and detergents, as well as in petroleum refining. Calcium hydroxide, also known as slaked lime, is used in construction, water treatment, and agriculture. Some hüdrooksiidide are important in biological systems; for instance, magnesium hydroxide is used as an antacid and laxative. The reactions of hüdrooksiidide with acids are characteristic neutralization reactions, forming water and a salt.
